If I Were a Muscle

September 2, 2018

If I could choose to be any muscle in the human body I would be an abdominal muscle. They are the most highly adaptable muscle in the body. They are the only muscle group that you can train everyday. Every other muscle group is recommended to have one day of rest. Abdominal strength increases quickly, as needed. They also decrease in strength quickly when not in use (you could say that this is their one drawback).

My favorite part of the abdominals is that the muscle knows when they don’t have any more energy for the work. While a bicep might be able to struggle through lifting that heavy box, or that last rep of a curl, and quadriceps might slowly achieve that final lower leg extension, when the abs are done, they’re done. No more energy or strength left for that final sit-up, and they simply stop. There’s clarity there, and that’s beautiful to me.

The abdominals are simple, straightforward, and are quick to adapt. That’s just a lovely model for how I’d like to be.
